This is Sharaku's masterpiece, depicting the role of Takemura Sadanoshin, played by kabuki actor Ichikawa Ebizo III.

Sadanoshin's loyal samurai, with his anguished expression, is a quintessential human drama. The wrinkles between his brows, his slightly parted mouth, and the gleam in his eyes reflecting his wavering emotions—Sharaku brilliantly captures the innermost conflicts of the human heart.

By eliminating the background and letting the character stand out, the purity of emotion is maximized. This work quietly yet powerfully conveys the life of a man embracing both samurai pride and human weakness.

Sharaku Toshusai, the artist, was an enigmatic ukiyo-e artist active in the mid-Edo period. Although his career lasted only about 10 months, he left behind a body of work exuding intense individuality, particularly in his portrayals of actors. His sharp portrayals of inner characters, using exaggerated facial expressions and bold compositions, overturned conventional wisdom of the time. Its true identity is still unknown, and its mysteriousness is one of its charms.
