The South Wind brings Fine Weather
Series:
/
Known as "Red Fuji," this work depicts the moment Mount Fuji is bathed in the morning sun on a clear summer morning with a crisp southerly wind blowing through.
The clarity of the air, the contrast of red and blue covering the mountainside, and the quiet tension created by the thin clouds drifting in the distance—this work fully demonstrates Hokusai's keen observational skills. Its gentle strength, like the breath of nature, inspires quiet courage in the viewer.
Equipped with both the divine and familiar qualities of Mount Fuji, this work is still spoken of today as a "primal landscape of the Japanese heart."
Hokusai Katsushika is a leading ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period. His masterpiece, "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," depicts the beauty of Japanese landscapes with powerful compositions and vivid colors, and is highly acclaimed worldwide. He revised the title of his work more than 90 times throughout his life, constantly pursuing new forms of expression. His bold compositions and unique brushwork had a profound influence on later Impressionist painters.
