One of the most famous paintings in the "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" series is "Kameido Plum Estate." Located in Kameido, eastern Edo, the plum estate was a popular tourist destination known for its plum blossoms. In this work, an old plum tree known as the "Garyobai" (Garyubai) fills the foreground, with the plum-viewing visitors and the distant mansion visible through its branches. This bold composition invites the viewer to peer out from the shade of the tree, lending the painting depth and poetry.
The pure white plum blossoms contrast beautifully with the crimson-purple background, evoking the scent of early spring. Each petal is meticulously painted, and the undulating branches and the robust bark convey a sense of natural vitality. The artist's work transcends simple realism, attempting to capture the seasonal atmosphere and the passage of time. The vibrant yet tranquil painting beautifully blends the anticipation of spring with the peaceful daily lives of the people.
The artist, Utagawa Hiroshige, was an ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period and known as a master of landscape painting. In his masterpiece, "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido," he depicted scenes rich in travel emotion with delicate use of color, conveying to people the joy of travel. He excelled in depicting natural elements such as rain and snow, and many of his works are filled with tranquility and emotion. His soft depictions of landscapes have had a great influence on artists around the world.
